Rev. Fr. Dr. Paulinus Chukwudi Nweke

Paulinus Chukwudi Nweke is a Nigerian-Italian priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos, Nigeria. He was born and raised in Jos and educated in several institutions in Nigeria and Italy, including St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary, Makurdi, St. Augustine Major Seminary, Jos, the University of Jos, Jos, and the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. He holds separate Bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and theology (Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome), Post-Graduate Diploma in Conflict Management and Peace Studies (University of Jos, Jos), and Bachelor’s, Licentiate, and Doctorate degrees in the social sciences (sociology - with specialization in political sociology) (Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome).

 

Fr Nweke has had several pastoral and academic experiences in both Nigeria and Italy. He started his priestly service as an Assistant Parish Priest at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Shendam in 2003. After a year in Shendam, he was transferred to Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral, Jos where he was an Assistant Cathedral Administrator from 2004 to 2007. During this period, he also served as the Coordinator of Interreligious Dialogue and Ecumenism, Catholic Archdiocese of Jos (2004-2009), Associate Editor, The Word of Life Newspaper and Deputy Director of Social Communication, Catholic Archdiocese of Jos (2005-2009). Between 2007 and 2009, he was Director, Directorate for Women, Youth and Education, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Plateau State Chapter, Priest-in-Charge, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Kabong, Jos, and co-secretary to the then Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Most Rev. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama.

 

He was sent on pastoral service (Fidei Donum) to the Diocese of Terni-Narni-Amelia, Italy from 2009 to 2020 where he served in the parish, school and hospital apostolates. Between 2016 and 2020, he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, where he taught courses in Sociology, Political Science, and Methodology of Social Science Research. He is currently the Catholic Chaplain of the University of Jos, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Sociology of the same university and Founder/Executive Director of the Centre for Social Research and Leadership Development in Jos. Dr. Nweke consults for a number of local and international organizations and he researches and publishes on issues related to institutionalism and institutional design; democracy and democratization; ethnic politics; religion and politics; nationalism and social cohesion; immigration and social integration; conflict and peacebuilding; with focus on Sub-Saharan Africa – Nigeria in particular. He speaks Igbo, Hausa, English, and Italian fluently.
