Prof. Tanko Ishaya

Professor Tanko Ishaya is a computer scientist with a mathematics background and over 25 years of academic experience. He is an international scholar and researcher and has demonstrated excellent management and leadership abilities. Professor Tanko has a  BSc in Mathematics/Edu from the University of Jos, Nigeria and an MSc and PhD in Computation from the University of Manchester, Manchester, UK in 1997 and 2001 respectively. His PhD was focused on the development of trusted systems. 

 

Professor Tanko worked as Information Technology consultant with  GFA Consulting and Business Link, Merseyside, Liverpool, UK. He joined the University of Hull, UK in October 2000 as a Lecturer and rose to become the Head of the Centre for Internet Computing of the University of Hull, UK. He was the founding Director of the University of Jos’ Directorate of Information and Communication Technology  (ICT) whilst on sabbatical in 2008 from the University of Hull, UK. He later returned to Nigeria and doubled as the Director of ICT and pioneer Head of Computer Science Department of the University of Jos.  He also served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Jos, during which he inspired research, teaching, partnerships and innovation by the adoption of technology for administration and teaching. Tanko has served in many national and international committees and groups including being Chairman, Committee of Directors of ICT in Nigerian Universities, member of the TetFund Technical Advisory Group, member of the French Government funded Nigeria-France Adaptation to Climate Change Research Group. He is a fellow and member of a number of professional bodies – including being  fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS), Nigerian Computer Society (NCS), Association of the Forensic Professionals of Nigeria (AFPN), Chartered Institute of Human Capital Development of Nigeria (CIHCDN). He is a certified project manager, a certified forensic examiner and a recognised Expert witness.

 

Professor Tanko's research and teaching expertise that range from information management, Technology Support for Personalized eServices,  eHealth, Data Engineering,  business intelligence, mobile and ubiquitous computing, to more technical aspects of Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), security and trustworthy computing, digital and forensics computing are outstanding and of international standard. His current research and development is on the deployment of space technology and artificial intelligence for surveillance systems. He successfully executed a number of national and internationally funded Research Projects as Principal Investigator (PI) and co-investigator and has supervised to successful completion a good number of PhD students and MSc dissertations in various areas of computing in the UK and Nigeria. His research has supported, influenced and contributed to key areas of government policy nationally and globally. He is currently undertaking funded research and development on artificial intelligence approach to pattern recognition for security surveillance purposes. Professor Tanko is the current Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Jos, Nigeria.
