Prof. Fatai Aremu

Fatai Ayinde Aremu is Professor of Political Science, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. He obtained B.Sc. Political Science in University of Jos, M.Sc. Political Science in Usmanu Dan Fodio University, Sokoto and PhD Asia Pacific Studies at the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan where he was awarded certificate of excellence for outstanding quality of research.

He was Senior Technical Advisor on Policy and Legislative Advocacy at a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded advocacy and social accountability project, Partnership for Advocacy in Child and Family Health (PACFaH), a project anchored by development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), Abuja, Nigeria. In that position, he coordinated and conducted a number of studies, training programmes and top-notch policy engagement on health sector budget, health policy and legislation. Before joining dRPC, he was the Head of Socio-Political Unit at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, National Assembly, Abuja where he conducted policy research and training activities on policy engaged research, bill analysis and budget tracking for Legislators, Legislative Aides and Parliamentary Staff.

Professor Aremu has developed, organized and facilitated a number of policy engagement activities and conducted training programmes in policy oriented research. These include Critical Policy Engaged Research (CPER) and Informed Research Consumers (IRC) modules which address the peculiar needs of demand and supply sides of research evidence. The modules have been piloted and delivered successfully across African countries. The training programmes which takes place twice a year is delivered to cohorts of researchers and policy actors from different African policy institutions, universities, research institutes, CSOs and think-tanks. It is funded and organized by the Partnership for Social and Governance Research (PASGR) and Institute for Development Studies (IDS), University of Sussex, UK, in Nairobi, Kenya with the support of DFID.

He organized and facilitated the Utafiti Sera Policy Forum on Inclusive Growth and Employment Creation in Agriculture and Agroprocessing in Nigeria at National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in collaboration with the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR). He facilitated a policy training retreat for Members of Senate and House Committees on Health, Primary Healthcare, Health Institutions and Appropriation. The Retreat which took place in Pan African Parliament, Midrand also involved interactive sessions with the South African Parliamentary Committees on Health and Appropriation in Cape Town, South Africa.

He is the author of Asymmetrical Foreign Policy Behaviour of Japan and China (2011), co-editors of Introduction to International Relations (2012) and Two Decades of Legislative Politics and Governance in Nigeria’s National Assembly (2020). His works have appeared in Africa Today, African and Asian Studies, Ritsumeikan Journal of Asia Pacific Studies, Asia Pacific World, etc.

He was a Directing Staff at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Nigeria’s apex policy think tank. He is currently the Senior Knowledge and Innovation Manager at the development Research and Projects Center (dRPC), Abuja, Nigeria. He is happily married with children.
